It’s no small coincidence that since President Obama’s historic announcement this past year, that the U.S. would loosen travel restrictions to Cuba, Havana was vibing at three major fashion houses for resort 2017.
Chanel actually showed his collection at the ‘Paseo del Prado’, an iconic pedestrian walkway in the center of the city with classic songs like “La Cucaracha” playing in the background. Floral trimmed fedoras were seen on most models, as were cigar box shaped bags and spectator shoes. Lagerfeld’s use of vibrant colors, flowy dancing dresses and Cuban cars prints made me want to do dance the rhumba!
Rosie Assoulin also took inspiration from Havana with covetable hand crocheted crop tops, must have ruffled skirts, tiered dresses and off the shoulder blouses – I’m in love with all of it!
Valentino’s use of bold color, vibrant prints and embroidery in his resort collection – also influenced by Havana, had me hopping on the next flight out.
Pucci, Rochas and Zuhair Murad all had a tropical, floral theme throughout their collections. Whether on not Cuba was also on the minds of these designers, I am going to take this as my cue that I need to pay a visit to this magical island!
Fun Fact: My mother was born in Cuba and moved to New York at age 12. I grew up hearing stories from my grandparents, great aunts, uncles and my mother about their idyllic life before they left during the 1959 revolution. I’ve always wanted to visit and if I do get the opportunity to travel there, I will definitely be sporting one of these fabulous pieces from resort!
