During my free time which is usually on vacation and often on Saturdays, I love and live to read. I find it relaxing, therapeutic and enjoy being drawn into stories whether it be a romantic saga, a memoir or historical fiction. The stories often transport me to another time and another place of a bygone era or exotic locale.
I just finished reading two fabulous books that I highly recommend. Next Year in Havana is a romantic novel but not in a cheesy way. I can’t remember who recommended this book, but I felt a strong connection to the story as my mother was born and raised in Cuba. I almost felt like I was reading her story that took place during the time Batista’s regime was overthrown by Fidel Castro. Though not exactly my mother’s story, this novel is filled with love, passion and family secrets.
The Paris Seamstress is also a must-read. This book traveled with me from Dallas to Miami and I was sorry to see it end. It was set both in Paris during WWII and New York City both past and present. This book hit all the right notes with a bit of fashion, history and a good old love story.
Another book on my spring reading list that is popular with book clubs and on the best seller list is Educated, by Tara Westover. This memoir is Tara’s journey from her isolated childhood in Idaho to the classroom at Cambridge University. Her story is inspiring and empowering. Please read!
One the weekend I completed a soon to be released book by a dear friend, The Floating Feldmans. This is a story about what happens when a family reunites on a week-long cruise – think the perfect storm. This witty novel is a great beach vacation read which is where I got started. My Year of Rest and Relaxation is not what the title suggests. Though described as dark humor, I found the story disturbing and I just don’t get the all the accolades. I would classify this as a must NOT read.
