This past weekend my daughter Vivian and I visited the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This years exhibition, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” was a breathtaking experience that played to each of my senses. Throughout the exhibit there were background films and music that paid homage to the Asian contribution to fashion. The silk and sequined gowns were regal and elegant. The intricate embroidery, detail, and design otherwise knows as Chinoiserie, took inspiration from Chinese porcelain, ancient traditional kimonos, and art. An eye catching piece was a flawless diamond brooch in the shape of an Asian temple. Perhaps a gift for my fiftieth? Ha!
Throughout the exhibit, I couldn’t help but imagine what it would feel like to wear one of these exquisite gowns. The one hour was pure fantasy. Definitely need to add China to my must visit list.
