I finally made it to DC this year for the Cherry Blossom Festival!
I was super lucky that I had the most ideal weather…sunny, mid 70’s and no humidity – a perfect way to welcome in spring!
I took the Acela as per some friends advice, a quick and pleasurable 2 hour and 40 minute train ride from Penn Station.
Once I arrived, it was easy to catch a ride to the picturesque and dreamy Tidal Basin, where the festival is held.
I could not believe how busy it was! I did not think I was going to be in massive company. Apparently, over 1.5 million people visit each year to admire the 3,000 cherry trees given to DC from Japan in 1912 as a gift to signify their friendship.
The good part was, I was able to ask as many random people as I wanted to take photos of me without feeling uncomfortable.
I took a leisurely 1.8 mile walk around the Tidal Basin reservoir, while soaking in the beauty of the trees in blossom. It was a sea of pink and no coincidence I wore my own shade of pink coat to match.
As a bonus, I was able to visit the Jefferson, FDR and MLK monuments on my walk and take in a little history. It was absolutely divine.
From there, I made a quick stop at the Washington Memorial which I haven’t visited since my 8th grade graduation trip.
Next, it was off to lunch at the Founding Farmers, an American style farm to table restaurant. I was able to snag a seat at the bar, order a drink and indulge in a hearty and healthy meal.
My last stop were 3 chic boutiques, hu’s wear, hu’s shoes and Relish. All three were in the heart of Georgetown with wonderfully curated selections of top tier designers. I must give a shout out to hu’s boutiques. I met the owner Eric, who is super friendly and has wonderful taste!
I am thrilled I was able to experience DC in a day and check off another awesome experience on my bucket list.
I wish I had my kids with me and have already been mentally plotting out another trip here as there is so much to see.
I highly recommend a trip to DC and if you live in the NY area, go for it!!! It’s eassssy!!!
