A couple of weeks I posted a question on IG Stories asking “what essential wardrobe pieces do you need help shopping for?”. I received quite a few responses which inspired me to write this summer wardrobe staples post.
As much as I enjoy adding a few “of the moment” pieces to my wardrobe each season, I find myself reaching for the basics on a daily basis as they truly are the foundation of my wardrobe.
Below are my 10 summer wardrobe staples that I definitely can’t live without.
The Denim Short
I recently came across these Agolde Parker Vintage Shorts in a classic blue denim which in my opinion, is the perfect length. They hit at just the right spot and they’re a bit loose on the leg, just the way I like it.
The White Tee
When it comes to the white tee, Re/Done x Hanes is always a go-to. There are many styles to choose from including this boxy cropped tee and this classic tee which I just added to my white tee collection. When it comes to the crop it like it’s hot white tee, I am a fan of x Karla.
The Swimsuit
The black and white swimsuit is always a summer staple. Though a bit more of an investment piece, I am a long-time fan of Eres’s styles. I appreciate their classic and flattering cut and they wear really well. Also, my “girls” aren’t what they used to be, so I find their bathing suits offer a bit of support if you will. For a more affordable black one-piece swimsuit, it’s worth checking out this square neckline beauty by Madewell.
I must have a thing for piping trim detail because the two bathing suits I bought this season were this blue with white piping retro-inspired bikini set by Lisa Marie Fernandez and this orange nautical vintage-inspired one-piece swimsuit by Eres. Even though these might not be your typical summer swimsuits, I know they will have longevity in my closet and are ones I will take along with me on future beach getaways.

The Striped Tee/Sweater Whatever
I’m not sure where or when my love of stripes came about but I simply can’t get enough. The Breton stripe as they’re known, originated in France and became part of the seamen uniform. Come to think of it, my father used to have a 46-foot sailboat which we would vacation on every year throughout my childhood and teenage years, so perhaps this is where my love of nautical stripes originated.
Kule is the queen of the striped tee. They offer a range of styles, fits, and fabrics and they’re simply amazing. This season, I added their taupe/indigo signature stripe sweater in a linen-cotton fabric to the mix. I’ve worn it quite a few times already and I am so obsessed.
Another striped tee I came across this summer season is this cropped striped cotton jersey tee by the Frankie Shop. I appreciate the cool and relaxed fit. It also comes in a yellow/white stripe version which I am currently swooning over.
The White Pant
The color white is most definitely synonymous with summer and I am so here for it. These AGolde 90’s mid-rise jeans are a winner. For a white cotton pant option, Nili Lotan’s high-waisted wide-leg silhouette is a must-have. PS. you can thank me later.
The Straw Hat
Straw hats are a summer wardrobe staple for many reasons. First and foremost, they help to protect us from the harmful sun rays, they act as a superb cover-up for our grey hairs (I’m speaking for myself here) and they make for a cool fashion accessory statement.
For a bit of effortless attitude this season, definitely check out Rag & Bone’s Panama Hat which by the way is now 70% off! This safari hat by California cool girl, Jenni Kayne, is another fab option that I literally just purchased before writing this post. Do you see how dangerous this business can be? My daughter Sonia actually owns this hat and it’s so cool and simple enough to wear with almost anything in your wardrobe.
If you are interested in channeling your inner cowgirl, giddy up over to J.W. Bennet’s site and check out their Western-style straw hats. I have one of these and wear it quite often. PS. This Jackson Hole-based brand will deliver anywhere in the US.
The Straw/Rattan/Wicker Bag
Is it even summer if you don’t own a straw tote/clutch etc..?
I love the effortlessness, ease, and go-with-everything nature of these bags. I’m obsessed with all the options below including this unique tulip basket style by Ulla Johnson. This Cult Gaia rattan clutch with a structured silhouette is another standout and works for both day and night.
The Nude Sandal
I am a Tkees girl through and through. I’ve been wearing these minimal nude flip flops for years, I have been purchasing them on repeat for years and they have also come to many a fashion rescue for years. Did I mention they’re $55?
A slightly more elevated option are these Aeyde minimal flip flops with a square toe which are currently in my shopping cart.
The Summer Clog
The clog as a summer staple may be open for debate but here at Fortune Inspired, the clog is a sure-fire summer essential. Clogs have a retro vibe to them, they’re casual and cool and they offer some height but in a bohemian and effortless way.
This sweet Swedish Hasbeens 70’s inspired style clog are a favorite that pairs well with maxi dresses and cropped tapered pants to name a few. They’re also quite comfortable.
The Sunnies
Last but not least on my summer wardrobe staples list are the sunnies.
Lately, I have been wearing these oval cat-eye tortoiseshell sunglasses by Celine. I love this flattering shape and my daughters highly approve so I know they are definitely keepers.
